A Barna report released this week finds that while American religious beliefs and practices underwent some dramatic changes immediately following the 9/11 attacks five years ago, those practices have returned to their previous levels. A few items from the report:
- Church attendance spiked in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, but by January 2002 church attendance was back to "normal."
- After the attacks, many adults indicated that they felt more skeptical about traditional religious beliefs--belief in absolute good and evil, a benevolent God, and others. However, this spike in skepticism also faded back to normal levels in time.
- There's been no significant change in the intensity with which most Americans adhere to their faith since the attacks.
- The number of Americans identifying themselves as Muslim has remained the same since the attacks.
Lots of interesting info in the report; take a few minutes to peruse it. Do the reports' findings ring true with you? Did your own spiritual life follow this pattern--a spike in activity for a few months after 9/11, followed by a return to your "normal" level of prayer, church attendance, and other religious activity? Did 9/11 have a impact on your faith--inspiring you to delve more deeply into it, or causing you to feel more skeptical about it--and did that impact last?
