Here's something that goes well with Ruth's post below about debating vs. arguing: Joe Carter at Evangelical Outpost has some excellent thoughts on "Christian wife-beaters" and the blogging culture of critique.
Joe looks at the state of interaction in the Christian blogosphere today, and he sees too much strident dissension over trivia:
Arguments over doctrine, of course, have been around as long as believers have been blogging. And with over 10,000 Protestant denominations it's not surprising that such differences find their way online. What I believe is unique and disconcerting is the way such trivial disputes have come to dominate general discourse.... I believe that we must find a way to address this behavior which has inexplicably become commonplace yet is explicitly condemned by Scripture. How do we hold our fellow Christian bloggers accountable? How do we respond to this “talk-radio”-style of debate in which no disagreement on even inessential matters (i.e., should churches be open on Christmas?) can be tolerated?
Good (but not easy) questions to ponder. Worth reading the full essay.
