Church meets state: the politics of God

It's pretty heavy reading for a Friday afternoon, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out this lengthy NYT essay by Mark Lilla about political theology, and why it's so difficult to grasp the interplay between politics and religious belief. Lilla believes that a better understanding of its own "church and state" history can help the West deal more effectively with modern Islam. Rod Dreher has some extended commentary on the piece that is also worth your time.
