Conservativianity?

In seminary, I read a fascinating book called Protestant Catholic Jew, by Will Herberg. My professor theorized that the country as a whole is trending toward a new, unifying ideology, which trumps previously stark divisions of belief. The unifying ideology is Conservatism. From what I have been witnessing recently, I think my professor is correct. In general, no longer do Protestants, Catholics, even Jewish people disagree over public policy--as long as it fits their idea of being "conservative."

In a story here on ThinkChristian about the nomination of another Roman Catholic for the U.S Supreme Court, comments such as these were posted:

"...it’s not about the qualifications of the nominee but about the clear conservative image that he presents."

"The Evangelical nominee did not work out so we’ll work with the conservative Roman Catholic nominee presented."

"I’m cool with a conservative supreme court nominee who happens to be Catholic..."

My question is, If Conservatism is trumping actual theology, is it a good thing? Is Conservatism Biblical? Is it Christ-like? Is it something the American Christian community should adopt whole-sale, even when it cancels differences in theological belief? Discuss.
