In seminary, I read a fascinating book called Protestant Catholic Jew, by Will Herberg. My professor theorized that the country as a whole is trending toward a new, unifying ideology, which trumps previously stark divisions of belief. The unifying ideology is Conservatism. From what I have been witnessing recently, I think my professor is correct. In general, no longer do Protestants, Catholics, even Jewish people disagree over public policy--as long as it fits their idea of being "conservative."
In a story here on ThinkChristian about the nomination of another Roman Catholic for the U.S Supreme Court, comments such as these were posted:
"...it’s not about the qualifications of the nominee but about the clear conservative image that he presents."My question is, If Conservatism is trumping actual theology, is it a good thing? Is Conservatism Biblical? Is it Christ-like? Is it something the American Christian community should adopt whole-sale, even when it cancels differences in theological belief? Discuss."The Evangelical nominee did not work out so we’ll work with the conservative Roman Catholic nominee presented."
"I’m cool with a conservative supreme court nominee who happens to be Catholic..."
