A new book, "
Monkey Business: The True Story of the Scopes Trial" has been thoroughly critiqued by writer Asher Price. He describes the book's thesis:
In [the book], University of Texas journalism professor Marvin Olasky and former Home and Christian Life Review editor John Perry make a religious argument for the teaching of intelligent design. Dedicating their book "To all those over the past 80 years who have shown courage in the face of ridicule by stating, 'In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,'" they claim that the teaching of Darwinian evolution has left America morally rudderless.
How did this consequence occur, you ask?
"The abandonment of absolute standards of morality and behavior eventually transformed the American cultural and legal landscape," Olasky and Perry write. Same-sex marriage became acceptable, welfare programs grew unbridled and "pornography became free speech." In order to save the country, they argue, schools ought to teach intelligent design, which they contend emphasizes personal responsibility rather than genetic explanations for human behavior.
Price concludes:
But the overall argument doesn't hold. The authors simply assert, without offering any proof, that Darwinian evolution has led to immorality in America. Other causes for this supposed slide — draconian drug laws, the dearth of sex education, the pressures of commerce — are never considered... Nor do the authors spell out exactly how intelligent design instills personal responsibility.
