Derek Webb used to be part one of the coolest bands in Christian music, Caedmon's Call. I haven't followed his journey closely, but I believe he left the group due to his disappointment in the Christian music industry.
He - and his wife, the equally talented Sandra McCracken - are soldiers of the indie underground, with healthy-sized followings and active touring.
Webb has also made many waves with raw, honest lyrics expressing his frustration with the dark underbelly of the American brand of Christianity. His new album, Mockingbird, is no different.
What IS different about this new album is that he's offering it for free, nada, zilch. You can download the songs for free from the album's website.
Whether it's giving away his album or barbecuing sacred cows, Webb has no problem going against the flow, even though it has meant losing fans and Christian bookstores as outlets for his music.
So check it out, but understand it ain't lite listening - it IS exceptional acoustic music filled with passion and love for a faith that is too often stained by culture.
