Hospitality through Beautification

Hey all, I was in beautiful Knoxville last week, and this week has been a long game of catch up. It's good to be back.

Saw this on Culture-Making (it's a fantastic blog) a few days ago and it struck me as a stellar idea. Then I saw the video reposted on In Light of the Gospel and knew I had to share it here:

Benched from Brandon McCormick on Vimeo.

The thing I find so wonderful about the story is how a fun afternoon with friends yielded a very tangible expression of love for each person that visits that bus stop.

However, I do like the question that Andy Crouch asks on Culture-Making: "Of course, the challenge will come over the coming months and years—will Jeff and his neighbors keep the paint fresh, the flowers watered, the mulch raked? That will be the true sign that this became a lasting cultural good."

Any thoughts on Mr. Crouch's reflection? What are some creative ways your church or friends have impacted your community? Other thoughts?

I think that is an important question and a necessary "next step" in this kind of process. But at the same time, another important point concerns how much their work inspires others to do the same. The community could change because others throw in and contribute. Wonder if the true sign of cultural change is not only whether they will keep coming back but if others will join in on the project?
