Are all sins equal in God’s eyes?

In presenting the Gospel, evangelicals often make the point that any sin, no matter how big or how small, is enough to separate us from God. Whether you told a little white lie or murdered somebody, the spiritual end-result is the same: you're a sinner who needs God's grace. Nothing too controversial so far, right?

Over at the Parchment and Pen blog, C. Michael Patton argues that we've taken the "all sins are equal" concept too far, and that a closer look at the Bible shows that God does, in fact, take some sins more "seriously" than others. He's not disagreeing with the belief that all sin, big or small, puts you in need of God's grace. But he says that we shouldn't assign spiritual equality to sins of very different magnitudes. He cites several examples from scripture, including the famous "committing adultery in your heart" passage in Matthew:

Is there a difference in the eyes of God between thinking about adultery and actually doing it? Absolutely. If we say anything other than this, I believe we do damage to God’s character and encourage the act based upon its premonition. The point Christ makes in Matt. 5:28 is not that lust and the actual act are equal, but that they both violate the same commandment, even if the degrees of this violation differ. This way, Christ was telling all people (particularly the religious establishment of the day) that thought they were safe because they had fulfilled the letter of the law that the law runs much deeper. The spirit of the law is what matters. Therefore, if you have ever lusted, you have broken the sixth commandment. If you have ever hated your brother, you have broken the fifth commandment (Matt. 5:22). But, again, the breaking of the principles of the commandment is the issue, not the degree to which it is broken.

What's your reaction? Is Patton onto something? Is this distinction just being nitpicky, or does it have a real impact on our understanding of sin and grace?

you really need to re-read the bible and pary and ask the Holy Spirit if all sins are equally woth being sent to Hell in the eyes of the Lord. Yes, in man's are there are worse crimes then others but in the eyes of God, sin is sin... period
Why are we disqusing degree of sin, are there degrees of repentance?
Sin is sin, when you sin go to the Father, confess it, and He is faithful to forgive our sins and cleanse us from unrighteousness.

All people are lost without Christ, it has nothing to do with what sin you did or did not do (no one is without sin). That is why God sent the sinless, spotless lamb Jesus, He is the life boat, just get in, who cares how bad or how good (no one can be good enough) you are, accept the sacrifice of Jesus, and stay tender to His love, and repent when you sin.
the effect of sins are all different
Dishonoring your parents is a sin, but I cannot believe that it is as bad as sodomizing, raping, & molesting little boys. Abomination means something "to detest" or detestable thing, & the Old Testament proves that there were worst punishments for homosexuality than stealing. Now all sin is breaking of the law, but that's where the sin stops being equal depend on the specifics.
That doesn't mean God isn't going to forgive you. God hates sin, it's the opposite of God and it's what separates us from him. If you kill someone, it isn't going to necessarily pull you farther away from God, as compared to someone who is a pathological liar. My main point: Because of the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made, we are forgiven. All we have to do is repent. It doesn't matter how big we might think the sin is compared to another sin. It can all be forgiven because God had sent his one and only son to die for us on the cross.
Degrees of sin..... Any sin is an affront to God; outside the Body of Christ, there will be degrees of punishment for the degrees of sin, yet, "in" Christ, there is no sin that will not be forgiven. Sounds weird in our human minds, but Blood of Jesus washes all that away. Simply amazing, and only Jesus can do that for us.
It's worth discussing :)
James 2:10
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

The wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23.
This doesn't say the wages of some sin is death. The wages of ALL sin are death. The earthly consequences/punishment might be different, but all sin separates us from God, therefore, hell is the end result without a relationship with Jesus.

Two boys grow up together. One is perfect, and lives 100 years. But, he lied to his mom once when he was 5, and he never was saved or asked Jesus for forgiveness. The other boy lived to be 200 years old, and murdered one person every day. But the last day of his life, he found Christ and repented. Guess which one went to Heaven.
Matthew 12:31 "every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Verse 32 "anyone who speaks agianst the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." So there is an unforgivable sin which leads to death.
