To debate or argue?
Which to do? A debate is defined as a deliberation--the function of which is to consider something; to engage in argument by discussing opposing points.
Discourse versus vitriolic attack. Or in some cases, argument.
Consider yourself when making your point or suggesting someone else is wrong for disagreeing or not facing the same convictions…are you showing love?
Are you in discourse to change your thinking? Or are you posting to argue and stump for your point of view?
It was John Milton who suggested what follows here, as quoted by William Blackstone and the foundation behind First Amendment rights. When truth and falsehood are allowed to freely grapple, truth will win out. It's a Mars Hill idea--and if you are an evangelical believer, you are on the side of truth.
Make your points, justly, in kindness, gentleness and love. Trust Christ to show the truth. Love wins.
