New Poll: Second Coming?

Do TC readers like TC polls?

Judging from the number of you that vote on these things, we'd have to say, "Yes!"

I know the TC writers have been stoked (yes, stoked) about the response rate on these things. We enjoy writing them and you enjoy voting on them.

This past week we asked if it was morally okay for a pastor to make a cool million for a salary. Here's what you said:

'I'm not sure.' garnered 12% of the vote with 26.
'No' brought in 69% of the vote with 148.
And 'Yes' rallied in with 19% or 42 Votes.

That's a total of 216 voters.

This week we're asking: Do you expect the second coming in your lifetime? Your choices are 'Yes', 'No', 'Unsure', and ' I don't think it's ever going to happen' Feel free to discuss your choices and the poll in the comments.

I voted "No" based on sheer probabilities. "Unsure" isn't a very strong answer to the question of whether I *expect* the second coming. If the question were, "Will the second coming happen in your lifetime?", of course, "Unsure" would be 100%. :-)

So I vote "No" because my ~80 years are nothing more than a blip, a mere ~4% of the time since the first coming. Chances are simply better that he'll come without my lifetime than within.
I think you'd have to define second coming as this question assumes certain eschatological beliefs.
That is one tricky question!
My answer hops between Yes and Unsure. Yes, because as a Christian living in this "end times", I expect Jesus to return at any moment. In fact, it isn't simply just an expectation, but I have a great longing and hope for His return. Time to time, often when things in life drain me, I look up to the sky and ask, "Lord, are you coming today?"
However, when you added that clause "in your lifetime", I think you meant more than a simple Christian expectation of seeing Jesus' return at anytime, but actually, whether I think the Day of Judgement to be as close as few decades of time. To that question, I can only say "unsure". I think it goes against what the Bible teaches about the Lord's return when we put a time-constraint on when Jesus' second coming will actually be. Although the Bible talks about the discerning of the Age, and increasing tribulations and so on, what Jesus said about His second coming, which will be like a coming of a thief, unpredictable and sudden still stands clear and consistent.
I am going to say no. I don't focus on when He is coming back but just try to live like He is coming back anytime,
I think a better answer might be, "I wouldn't be surprised." I'm in my 50's and I've always sort of thought it would come in my lifetime. I think the signs are there, but, on the other hand, they have seemed to be there for other generations, as well. I suppose I'm actually "unsure" but I answered "yes" because that is the belief I've lived with most of my life. Besides, we are supposed to live as if it could happen at any time, so we should be "expecting" it on a daily basis. Right?
If the literal expectations of St. John, after receiving the revelation, were entirely accurate, the Second Coming would have been within HIS lifetime. Christians have also expected the Second Coming at the first and second millenia after the Nativity, give or take six years or so, and at various times in between. The only thing certain in Scripture is, be always ready, because you never know the day or the hour. It also says that Jesus will return like a thief in the night, which is not exactly a description of coming down in glory from the sky, surrounded by angels. I believe God knew exactly what he was doing when he created our sun with enough hydrogen to last up to our own time and another five billion years afterward. Time means nothing to God. He's not in a hurry. We are the ones that always want to rush things along.
I would also say that the idea we should focus on is that He IS coming back. Not WHEN is He coming back. I've had this discussion with others before...and the reults are always a wide range. My father thinks that it'll happen in his lifetime. I on the other hand feel that if I live in a way that is too focued on 'when' I begin to lose sight of Him and my purpose on this Earth. (Didn't mean for that to be a cheesy rhyme!)

Thanks for the post!
My answer - I sure hope so. I pray for it daily.
My answer was no, just because I think there is still a lot that needs to happen before the second coming and I'm not sure that it would happen in 40 years or so. But, then again, I don't know. It would be pretty cool to be apart of that. I just don't know for sure. But I'm still leading towards no.
