Last week, a woman took refuge in a Chicago church, seeking sanctuary from immigration officials looking to deport her to Mexico. The immigration issue is, of course, a hot political topic these days, but the event also raises the interesting question of whether churches can provide legal sanctuary for criminals or suspects wanted by the police.
There's a great article at Slate that looks at the tradition of church sanctuary. To sum up: it might sound nice, but churches today don't really have the legal status of Biblical cities of refuge. (As a church-attending bank robber learned the hard way on Sunday.)
