My wife and I attended a large celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Brooklyn this morning. There was a gospel choir, speeches from city leaders (including Mayor Bloomberg and Senator Schumer), and a keynote talk with two mothers of slain civil rights workers (James Chaney and Andrew Goodman). It was a wonderful time of community and worship. It struck me, as it does each time I experience Rev. King's message, that he was a prophetic voice based wholly on the gospel of Jesus Christ. His message only makes sense in the milieu of the grace and peace of the gospel. May we thank God for this conveyer of truth in our world's history.
