Word has it that Shusaku Endo's novel Silence is coming to the big screen, directed by Martin Scorcese. Silence, set during the persecution of Christians in 17th-century Japan, is a superb and powerful novel (as are several of Endo's other works). Worth reading, if for no other reason than to see how Endo's story of tortured faith makes the transition to film. (Hat tip: Looking Closer.)
