Step away from that keyboard! Shutdown Day 2007

On March 24, thousands of people will be shutting off their computers for the day--hitting the power button, stepping away from the computer desk, and doing something else. Shutdown Day isn't motivated by Luddite fear, but by simple curiosity: can we disconnect from our computers and the internet, if only for a day? How will a typical day in our lives be affected by lack of access to computers?

It's an interesting question to think about, and a nice reminder to turn off the monitor and talk to the real people around us every now and then. And while participation in Shutdown Day is not being pitched as a religious activity, I think it fits well into one of the great traditions of Lent: voluntary self-denial, choosing to give up something in your life and re-examine your personal and spiritual priorities.

What about you? Could you step away from the keyboard for a day? A week, a month? What else in your life might you benefit from temporarily giving up? With Easter on the horizon, it's the perfect time to give it some thought.
