This just in from one of my favorite writers . . .
- Pavel, a Romanian prisoner has filed a lawsuit against God. His complaint was that even though he offered God prayers, gifts and a certain amount of devotion — God delivered Him into the Devil's hands. He claimed that in his Baptism vows he and God made a pact: He would worship and serve God and God would protect him. His lawsuit was dismissed because the courts determined that there was no way to ensure that God would show up for the trial.
First, let's begin with this notion that Pavel has articulated concerning the deal or pact he believes God made with him. I must admit I am floored by Pavel's honesty. Most of us will not admit it but this "deal mentality" is a primary motivator in the Evangelical community. How many of us feel cheated when "bad things happen to good people?" The "good people" aforementioned being ourselves! We have this sense that if we are really, really good and faithful to God then God will be good to us (i.e. protect us from pain and suffering).
