Consumerism must be on people's minds these days, because in the last week I've come across two good essays talking about the spiritual challenge that our consumer culture poses to the Christian life. Have a look:
- From Christ's Church to iChurch, which argues that the true danger of consumerism is not just that we buy too many iPods and gadgets, but that we have come to see the Christian faith as just another brand among many. Is your Christianity a sincere sign of faith, or is it a brand you use to define yourself--the same way you might define yourself by buying an Apple computer or a particular brand of shoes?
This piece also links to an interesting NYT article (registration required) about the struggle of Muslim clerics to deal with the rise of consumerism among their congregations in the United States. Sounds like they could get together and commiserate with a lot of Christian pastors...
- An article at Urbana.org on our calling to live as citizens, not consumers, of the Kingdom. The author suggests that the impulse to own the latest and greatest is a poor substitute for true peace as a child of God.
