What’s missing in ch__ch?

Nicene Theology is talking about those horrible slogans that churches put on their signs.

Every day on the way to work, I drive by two churches that put bad puns on their signboards. One of the churches appears to have recently run out of jokes and puns (which makes sense--I mean, how many of those things can there possibly be?) and has resorted to using pithy inspirational sayings instead--last week was Pray for rain; faith will be the umbrella! and this week is Dry times make roots grow deepest or something like that.

I'm sure that somewhere out there, somebody is really inspired when they drive by and read those little gems.

Every time I pass one of those signs, I'm reminded of this cartoon. Every now and then, I feel a little bad for being so snarky. And I wonder if the limited space on the sign might be better filled with church service times, the church's web address, or--as the blog post mentioned above suggests--just a simple statement of welcome.
