Where It’s Not A.D. 30

Interested in the global church? Or, dissatisfied with the Western church?

I don't have the time to watch this whole video right now, but if the rest of Reggie McNeal's forty-five minute talk is as insightful as the first ten I think it'll be well worth your while.

Here are a few notable quotations:
Sarcastically: "It's growing mostly in house churches because they don't know how to do church right."
"You wouldn't consider that [Pakistan] to be the hotbed of the Christian movement on planet Earth, but there was a meeting of house church leaders on the way from the conference that they had--on the way back to another village they planted six churches on the bus. [laughter] 'I'll take my street.' 'I'll take my street.' 'I'll take'--contrast that with what it takes for us to crank out another church widget, or another worship widget, or another fall program widget."
"In many places of the world there's a Pentecost every single hour. It is A.D. 30 all over again. Now would you like to take a wild guess at where it's not A.D. 30? [laughter]"

Do you think the focus of the church is shifting off of the Western world? Any other thoughts?

I certainly HOPE the focus is shifting off the Western world, because we are not martyrs for the cause. We are honest and faithful and deep in our love for Christ, but we don't suffer for our faith. What they go through in hostile developing countries is suffer for their faith, and they deserve our prayer and admiration. I love the church we attend, but it is nowhere near 30 AD there.
