Whither after Web 2.0?

Where is Web 2.0 going? An essay by Michael Hirschorn has some rather sharp thoughts on what he calls the "web 2.0 bubble". He describes a situation not unlike the late-90s "web 1.0 bubble"--lots of hype and genuinely cool ideas that aren't necessarily coalescing into suustainable business models. It's hard to argue against his point--when Procter and Gamble corporation has its own social network, you know you're reaching the final stages of an internet trend.

Of course, if Hirschorn's analysis turns out to be correct, it doesn't mean the end of social networking and everything that's grown out of the Web 2.0 "revolution"--that genie can't possibly be stuffed back in the bottle. But it will be interesting to see where the cool kids (and the venture capitalists) flock to next.
