As the shooting of Laquan McDonald inflames further racial animosity, our conversations must follow Christ's model of meeting others with compassion and empathy.

Empathy is demanding and tough and often uncomfortable. Thanks for the reminder of our calling to empathy as Christians. I've always felt that empathy, righteous outrage, the example of heroes of the faith, and the checks and balances of the Christian community are the proper ingredients of a recipe for justice. But it starts with empathy. I've wondered for example, if Mayor Emanuel had seen his own son as the victim of the shooting instead of Laquan McDonald, and acted in empathy for the release of the videotape instead of, as the accusations say, waiting for the election campaign to end, things would have been different.
