Allison, I really enjoyed this article.  The book you mentioned is now on my TBR list.  It is interesting to consider how I elevate the symbols of my faith, yet judge other traditions of "worshiping" theirs.  Thanks for this discussion.

Every Advent season, for as long as I've lived in my current house, I've looked forward to my across-the-street neighbor's singular Christmas decoration, the lighted Moravian "morgenstern" (the Morning Star), representative of the star over Bethlehem as well as of Jesus, the Bright and Morning Star.  An old widower, now in his '90's, an evangelical Lutheran, who has attended our kids' graduation parties and their backyard alternative wedding receptions, who talked long into the night with my dad about WWII memories, who still does his own yardwork (slowly), who emerged thinner and frailer after a month's hospital stay with a broken ankle, who always talks of the sustaining love of God at some point in our neighbor-to-neighbor conversations----his simple yet bright and beautiful star annually illuminates our section of the dark and quiet street. We moved our illuminated deer (Harry Potter's "patronus") to the backyard this year, so as not to spoil our view of his solitary star in the darkness.
