As a Flyers fan, I think it's awful...pretty interesting though...do you really think that signs like that draw people into churches? I have to imagine that many "witty" signs on the front lawns of churches around the country do more to turn people away than anything else.

I vote for awful.

In the late 90's the suburban Denver church across the street from the school I taught in had the exact same sign, but for Patrick Roy during one of the Avalanche Cup runs. I think it is one of the funniest things I've ever read on a marquee.

I vote awful. We have an Anglican church near here with the sign --' Too Much Greed = Need'.

Great point, Jon -- I agree. I certainly believe it ends up looking more like a 'joke' to those outside of the church and casts a rather dim light on the mission of the church altogether.

I don't vote awful, because I 'get it'...but it's certainly FAR from awesome.

...and notice no comment on the hockey aspect, because as a Southern girl, I surely know NOTHING about hockey! :)

Clever sign sayings: fail.

Notification about sermon topics/church events: meh.

In closing, these marquee signs are the worst idea ever thought up.

I don't think it's awesome or awful, it's just funny, which is probably how it's meant to be. Is the church not allowed to tell jokes?

I couldn't care less about sports but I' ALL FOR a church with a sense of humor. Lighten up.

I doubt signs bring people into a church (relationships & personal invitations do that) but I love a witty church saying and I think this one is great. This particular one got me to read your blog!

'Too much need = Greed' seems to make more sense.

Best Church sign I've ever seen read: "This is a sign from God"

Probably our use of English here in New Zealand but surely if there are too many greedy people eating- using- their way through the worlds resources then other people are left in need ?
"Too much Greed = Need".

I'm all for humor but not sure that this is effective. What should we expect soon, a church sign that starts, "A Christian, a Jew and a Muslim were sitting in a bar..."

If we believe scripture has the power that it does, I rather throw up a John 3:16 a 1 Timothy 2:3 or a few other scriptures that have a deeper and true message.

As a Canadian, my favourite variation on this is:

Jesus saves! Crosby gets the rebound! He shoots! He scores!!!!!!
