Seeing God in Toronto Blue Jays baseball

Can the sport of baseball mirror our maker? Certainly, says Toronto Blue Jays fan John Van Sloten.

I do find it awesome and humbling that the same God who created a tiny pebble on a planet 10 million light years from earth (that you and I will never even see) is also present during, and is delighted by, a perfectly executed double play or inside the park home run.

What a marvelous article! As a fellow Canadian, I cannot help but agree whole-heartedly with the sentiments expressed by this wonderfully erudite pastor. Anyone who can relate the resurgence of a Canadian baseball team to the glories of God's creation automatically hits a home run with me. Also... go Bluejays! :-)

Here's the sermon video if you're interested Shannon. Both CTV and CBC did news stories on the service yesterday as well... only in Canada eh? https://vimeo.com/141450312

I really enjoyed your thoughts on baseball and its beauty and symmetry. It is a beautiful thing, but I am a Cubs fan who is feeling the fear of a potential fall.

Having played baseball and/or fast pitch softball for about 30 years, and having coached for about 20 years, this article made me smile big. All that is said is true. :-)
I've long thought that some of the best things I've done in my life were done while coaching kids on the baseball diamond. We did baseball and so much more. And even years and years after, I still have a bond with so many of those kids, now men.

I fell out with sport when I realised that one actually had to have some kind of physical skill to play them and, since I was a football (soccer) fan in Scotland, I would never get the chance to see any of my teams win anything!
Still, I think that much of what you say about sport could be applied to any activity. For me, there is something godly about seeing a team of 8-12 interpreters deliver perfectly synchronised (well nearly) speeches in 3-4 languages at once, even better if it is in church. How about the capacity of the human mind to write content that links spirituality to the everyday and commonplace or, even better, the joy of building with Lego with a 3 year old, who is already inventing names for structures we couldn't have thought up.
Soort is all fine and dandy but it is people and the things we do alongside other people that make the difference.
