The Avett Brothers' True Sadness reminds us that what God declared as good has been smudged with dirt.

Great article! I picked up on a lot of these same themes as I listened to the new album. I think "Smithsonian" especially is a brilliant encapsulation of the painful reality of "life ain't forever and lunch isn't free" that we all must face up against as we try to make the most of our time in this world.

Liz, as you wrote:

When the brothers sing, "For life and its loveliness. And all of its ugliness," we are reminded that what God declared as good has been smudged with dirt. So now we have both light and dark...

Makes me think of Solomon's writing, "And therefore I was weary of my life, when I saw that all things under the sun are evil, and all vanity and vexation of spirit."
