The real reason we sleep together
June 19, 2014
Understanding our primal need to sleep together helps us understand our need to be held by God.

Love this, Caryn. The idea that we sleep together to know we are not alone is something else to consider as parents who sometimes feel pressure to make sure each kid gets his or her own room. Our children are all under 7 and they share a room, even though we have enough bedrooms for each of them to sleep alone. They argue about sharing space, and my husband and I wonder how many hundreds of hours of extra rest they would get if they slept apart, but then 11pm comes and I peek in to check on them before turning in myself ... And 9 times out of 10, they've hopped into bed together and are higgledy-piggledy topsy-turvy pretzeled into each other. Held by each other: a lesson in what it means to be part if the church, I guess.

There's a fascinating trend that speaks exactly to the sort of longing you address here, Caryn: cuddle parties. Another human attempt to meet our need to be held by God.

Do you think that God cuddled with Adam and Eve in the garden?
