Seeing the slow but sure breakdown of bodies and minds on Survivor brings Lent to life in a new way.

This is a beautiful piece, Branson. I love your observation here:

"When the goal is surviving, whatever allows you to do that is your ultimate, your god, your idol, what drives you."

I think you're right. Which makes it all the more amazing that when Satan appeared to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, his God was still none other than his Father. He didn't need an "immunity idol" to survive, and he would have rejected it even if he wanted it, because for him, a life without his Father being first wasn't a life worth living.

Whether or not we're in the discipline of giving something up (or taking something up), one of the things Lent ought to reveal for us is the subtle ways that other "gods" have begun to creep in and compete for God's place in our hearts.

Thanks for reminding me.
