Repetition can be a powerful tool—in music and in spiritual formation.

The repetition of God's name I have found to be a powerful spiritual
Practice. Called mantra,
This practice can sustain godly consciousness as surely as a child in trouble calls upon a parent, or a lover calls the Beloved by name .

Thanks for the article, Aarik. As a self-reflective person who recently got into songwriting, I've had to wrestle with how I want to treat repetition. I found myself getting frustrated even just 4 songs in as I felt that they were all about the same thing. Thanks for the reminder that repetition can tell us something important, whether it's that we have to break from patterns of destructive self-listening or remind ourselves of a truth we'd forgotten.

I love this perspective, Aarik. I hadn't thought about the use of repetition at this depth before. Thank you!

Great article Aarik . allow me to say at the outlet that if you are not aware of the writings of Peter Rollins he is a must in this area . in his book “ The idolatry if God “ he warns us that there is a fine line between obsession with God and true communion with the divine . As the Karl Barth states “ He who walks the narrow truth threads the razor head of heresy “ .
So indeed - for the image and likeness of Christ to come thru us in the now we must say - it’s all grace .
