When we take an interest in broken lives, we mirror God's interest in our own.

So how is this going to be used to share Jesus and spread the Gospel or even help bring biblical teachings to the prisoners?

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Norman. I appreciate where you're coming from with your question, though I don't personally see Ear Hustle as an especially strong evangelistic opportunity for the church. That would entail sending a message back into the prisons, and Ear Hustle is more of an opportunity to hear a message coming out of the prisons.

Of course, evangelism might be one proper response to that message. I could imagine situations where listening might prompt some important conversations in our Sunday school classes or ministry roundups, and that might even stir individual Christians, small groups, or entire congregations to respond to particular opportunties in area prisons.

But I'd also argue that even if those things didn't happen, we're already sharing Jesus simply by tuning in. Perhaps not verbally or even by name, but in the sense of imitating Jesus' love and concern for for the least and the last--meeting them where they are, validating them as human beings, being willing to spend time in their company without fear of being "contaminated" by their sins. Even if the people at San Quentin don't know we're listening, it's possible that our choice to listen is less about what we're doing for THEM (the prisoners) and more about what God might want to do in US (the listeners).

I’ve been thinking exactly what you’ve written about here ... God had me on this podcast before anyone had heard of it and it’s been a deeply moving reminder of exactly what you said ... that we are all the same, we suffer, and on it goes, on any given day there are sometimes very thin lines that separate us from which side of those bars we are on. I’m reaching out to one of the men that has been featured as I felt very moved in extending of myself to my fellow brother.

I hope this encourages all to do more, to be more, to be still and hear the voice of a God ...
